 We're happy to have Jeff Soto's blog up on the site which he'll try to update every few days.
Bunch of boring stuff to write about...
It snowed yesterday in Riverside. I've been here since 1985 and it's never snowed, it came as a shock to see small flakes falling down in our yard. I thought it was pollen then realized, no way, it’s snowing! It gets cold here in the winter (for southern CA) but dang, never would have thought I'd see snow! Jennifer, Shannon and I went in the backyard and tried to catch the snowflakes but they melted as soon as it touched our hands. Supposed to be super cold again tonight and the frost can damage plants and crops so I picked a bunch of avocados. Our tree has been producing some damn good ‘cados lately. It’s all about the guacamole...
Shaunna, Mike and Dylan came over last week and the babies had a bath together. These will be good photos to embarrass them with when theyÂ’re older...
Bought some new books the other day- Albert Reyes- I love this guy’s stuff, Jim Houser- will be showing alongside him at JLG in NYC Sept 2007, “Dear New Girl”- a book with tons of art from some of my art heroes- Kevin Christy, Taylor McKimmens, Jason Holley, the Clayton Brothers, etc. and American Hair Metal- a look at the glam rockers of the late 80’s. That’s aaaahwsome dude! I remember my friend Jacob and I were really into some of this stuff, Poison, Motley Crue, GnR, I guess when I think about it, we liked the better bands. We hated Stryper, thought they were lame.
BLK/MRKT is having it’s BMG Artists’ Annual show tonight. I got to see alot of the work earlier in the week when I dropped off my piece. I really like what Amir Fallah (creator of Beautiful/Decay mag) is doing, and there’s a lot of other fresh pieces in the show. I really like the direction they’re taking at BLK/MRKT. I forgot my camera that day but here’s an image of my new piece that will be in the show, “Fall Energy Waves”.

Went by the Mu Pan and Esther Pearl Watson show at La Luz de Jesus. At first I thought itÂ’d be a strange duo but somehow the paintings work pretty good together. TheyÂ’re both telling stories with their work- Mu PanÂ’s are epic stories of life and death, Esther Pearl WatsonÂ’s are memories of her fatherÂ’s UFO fascination. I really enjoyed both artists visions. I met Mu Pan a couple years ago at Fuse gallery NYC. HeÂ’s a cool guy and good friends with Regino Gonzales, an old homie from the I.E.

A couple months ago Jonathan Levine and Mark Murphy came out for a studio visit. he has uploaded some of the videos onto Youtube. Who knew there was a Ron Jeremy-Jonathan Levine connection?
After my show in November the stress level dropped a bit and I started playing a little Warcraft late at night. From an artistic point of view, I love the candy coated colors, I mean, look at the pretty sky color. They can do some cool stuff with videogame graphics these days. I grew up with Atari, Sega and Nintendo so seeing what they can do nowadays trips me out. I almost went into entertainment design in college, would have been fun working on games...

Last Friday we were pleased to open up Dave Kinsey's first solo show in San Francisco since before 2000 when Dave was doing a lot of work in streets with his then work partner Shepard Fairey. A lot of the smaller works are homage to that era, i.e., the titles are San Francisco street names. Love his new direction.

| STREETOPIA @The Luggage Store
After our Dave Kinsey opening last Friday, we made our way down Market Street for Luggage Store's opening of STREETOPIA. Ran into a lot of friends and was amazed at how transformed the gallery was. Multiple rooms built out to include a Free Cafe, a theater, a gallery/studio, and a library. Streetopia will host free performances, teachings, and talks in the city every day for the show's month-long run and, thus, will provide a temporary space that offers opportunities for participation, agency, critical thinking, learning, sharing of ideas, and tools for community building that will reverberate in the real city after the city we build in the gallery is long gone.

| INTERVIEW with Tristan Patterson
Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.

| Interview with Jeff Depner
Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.

West coast hip-hop iconic early 1990's hip-hop photographs, including numerous photos of 2pac, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, Warren G... the bonus: Eazy-E touting a skateboard and a gun?!

We love the art program at the SF Dump/ Recology. How many cities have dumps with an arts residency programs where atists are free to roam the dump, collect and use anything they find to create art from?
The residency includes 24-hour access to a well-equipped 2,000 sq. ft. studio, a monthly stipend, and an exhibition at the end of each residency. If you wanna get down on this great program, phone Micah Gibson at (415) 330-1414.

New Fish Print

Our buddy Jeremy Fish has a brand new print The Golden Hills out through Upper Playground. The print is made in an edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist, and printed at the fantastic Bloom Press in Oakland, California. 18" x 24" $100
This drawing was inspired by that looming feeling that San Francisco is an isolated island from the rest of the country. As SF becomes more and more expensive, and the lower income creative folks that make this city pulse get squeezed off the island, "the city that knows how" will slowly transform into a sterile west coast Manhattan full of tech chads and internet gurus. —Jeremy Fish

Marc Jacobs vs. The Graffiti Artist, Round 2: When Jacobs Turns Vandalized Store Into $680 Shirt <-- Earlier this week, on the night of the Met Ball, the Marc Jacobs boutique in SoHo was hit by French graffiti artist Kidult, who has famously vandalized Supreme, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others. The Asian Art Museum opens their grand first contemporary show PHANTOMS OF ASIA with a massive preview party this evening with DJs, food, and other goodies 7:30pm - midnight ~details
We went to the press preview yesterday and should have some photos to share, but time constraints due to preparations for our show w/ Dave Kinsey opening Friday and the lack of a mayor Ed Lee which all were waiting for... Well, we had to bail before they let us preview the show... What we've seen online looks great and tonight should be a blast. See you there.
